The Denver-based spacecraft division of Lockheed Martin, descended from the Martin Marietta facility that built the Viking landers in the 1970s. Through the 1990s and 2000s it was the prime contractor for most of NASA's Mars orbiters and landers. Its responsibilities on Mars Climate Orbiter included building the bus, the thrusters, and the ground software that translated thruster activity into navigation inputs.
