Longxi

A traditional Chinese village with terracotta roofs stretches along a narrow river, framed by mountains under a golden sunset sky.

A Han-dynasty commandery in the upper Wei River valley, in what is now Gansu province in northwestern China. The region sits on the tectonic boundary between the Tibetan Plateau and the North China Craton and has produced some of the largest earthquakes in Chinese history. The 138 CE event there is the one Zhang Heng's seismoscope is said to have detected from Luoyang, five hundred kilometres east.
