Lunokhod

Two miniature models of Lunokhod rovers, featuring large wheels and a prominent dish antenna, are displayed against a dark background.

Pair of unmanned Soviet rovers landed on the Moon in 1970 and 1973, the first remote-controlled vehicles to operate on another world. Each carried a French-built laser retroreflector. Lunokhod 1 fell silent in 1971 and its position was uncertain for nearly forty years, until imagery from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter let teams at Apache Point relocate it and resume ranging in 2010.
