Luoyang

A panoramic view of ancient Chinese architecture with traditional tiled roofs, set against a backdrop of modern skyscrapers and a hazy sunset sky, illustrating the historical and contemporary coexistence of Luoyang, a city in Henan province that once served as the capital of several dynasties.

A city in present-day Henan province that served as the capital of the Eastern Han and, intermittently, of several later dynasties. In the second century CE it was one of the two largest cities in the world, with a court bureaucracy, imperial workshops, and an astronomical observatory where Zhang Heng installed his instruments. It sits on the Luo River, on the eastern edge of the seismically active Loess Plateau.
