Marie Jackson

Marie Jackson, a geologist at the University of Utah, is shown wearing glasses and a dark sweater against a neutral background.

Geologist at the University of Utah whose work on Roman marine concrete, particularly the breakwater at Caesarea Maritima, identified the aluminous tobermorite crystals that strengthen the material over centuries. Her 2017 paper in American Mineralogist showed that seawater, normally a destroyer of modern concrete, was an active ingredient in the Roman recipe, slowly reacting with volcanic ash to produce durable crystalline phases.
