Merlin engine

A detailed view of a Merlin engine, a liquid-cooled, supercharged V-12 designed by Rolls-Royce in the mid-1930s, showcasing its intricate mechanical components against a dark background.

A liquid-cooled, supercharged V-12 designed by Rolls-Royce in the mid-1930s, displacing about twenty-seven litres and producing between one thousand and seventeen hundred horsepower across its variants. It powered the Spitfire, the Hurricane, the Mosquito, the Lancaster, and — after Packard licensed the design in 1940 — the American P-51 Mustang. Around 168,000 Merlins were built between 1936 and 1950.
