Tsar Nicholas I is depicted wearing an ornate military uniform adorned with gold epaulets and medals, symbolizing his role as the Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855.

Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855. A military autocrat fond of straight lines and engineering projects, he personally approved the construction of the Saint Petersburg–Moscow railway in 1842 and hired the American engineer George Washington Whistler to build it. The five-foot gauge that resulted shaped Russian and Soviet rail policy for the next two centuries.
