Norman Borlaug

A man with gray hair and a serious expression is dressed in a dark suit jacket over a white shirt, set against a neutral background.

Norman Borlaug was an American agronomist whose development of high-yielding, disease-resistant dwarf wheat varieties sparked the global agricultural transformation of the twentieth century. Operating primarily out of Mexico, he introduced practices like shuttle breeding to accelerate crop development. His work directly prevented mass famines in India and Pakistan during the 1960s, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 and establishing the foundation of modern, intensive agriculture.
