Mid-sized city on the Illinois River, home from 1940 of the US Department of Agriculture's Northern Regional Research Laboratory. Its corn-steep liquor medium and its strain hunting transformed penicillin from a laboratory curiosity into a drug that could be produced by the kilogram.
