Peter Godfrey-Smith

Peter Godfrey-Smith, wearing glasses and a blue shirt, stands against a dark background.

Australian philosopher of science at the University of Sydney, working at the intersection of biology and the philosophy of mind. His 2016 book Other Minds drew on years of diving with octopuses and cuttlefish at a site he and David Scheel named Octopolis, and made the case that cephalopod cognition is a genuine second experiment in consciousness, evolved entirely independently of the vertebrate line.
