Indian metallurgist (1963–2009) at IIT Kanpur whose careful analyses of the Delhi Iron Pillar between 1996 and 2008 established the modern consensus on why it resists corrosion. He also wrote extensively on ancient Indian metallurgy more broadly, including the iron beams of the Konark Sun Temple and the high-tin bronzes of Kerala, before his early death from cancer.
