Person

Robert Poole

A man with short gray hair and a neatly trimmed beard wears a dark suit, white shirt, and dark tie over a brown sweater vest.

British historian, latterly at the University of Central Lancashire, whose 1995 paper and subsequent book Time's Alteration dismantled the popular legend of the 1752 calendar riots. Poole combed contemporary newspapers and parish records and found no riot to report. What he reconstructed instead was the slower, messier reality of wage and rent disputes that did follow the change, alongside a long English suspicion of Roman arithmetic.
