Industrial ecologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His 2017 Science Advances paper, written with Jenna Jambeck and Kara Lavender Law, was the first attempt to estimate the total mass of plastic ever produced, used, and discarded. The figure — 8.3 billion metric tons by 2015 — has since become the standard reference. Geyer's later work argues that recycling, as practised, only modestly delays the same eventual fate.
