A wartime aero-engine plant on the western edge of Glasgow, opened in 1940 as a shadow factory to Rolls-Royce Derby. By 1943 it employed around twenty-five thousand people, the majority of them women, and turned out roughly a third of all Merlin engines built in Britain during the war. The site continued engine work into the 1980s and was eventually closed in 2005.
