Provincial capital in southeastern Turkey, ancient Edessa, near the upper Euphrates. Long-inhabited under Hittite, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule, it is now the modern access point for Göbekli Tepe, fifteen kilometres to the northeast. The province around it contains at least a dozen other monumental Neolithic sites of comparable age, collectively known as the Taş Tepeler or "Stone Hills."
