SEMATECH

The entrance to SEMATECH, a modern building with sleek brown walls and illuminated signage, stands at the end of a well-lit corridor.

A semiconductor manufacturing research consortium founded in 1987 by the US government and fourteen American chipmakers, in response to the Japanese capture of the DRAM market. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, SEMATECH coordinated pre-competitive research on equipment and materials, including the seed funding for EUV lithography in the 1990s. It wound down in 2015, by which point the technology had become global.
