Shibata stylus

A Shibata stylus rests on a vinyl record, its long, narrow contact patch illuminated against an orange label and dark background.

A specialised shape of phonograph stylus invented by Norio Shibata in 1972. Unlike a traditional spherical or elliptical needle, the Shibata stylus features a long, narrow contact patch. Originally designed to trace the ultra-high frequencies required for quadraphonic records, its design significantly reduces record wear while extracting microscopic detail from the groove walls.
