Japanese microbiologist who led the team at Kyoto Institute of Technology that isolated Ideonella sakaiensis from a PET recycling site in Sakai. The 2016 Science paper reporting the discovery has been cited more than two thousand times and seeded an entire subfield of enzymatic plastic degradation. Yoshida's group continues to characterise the structural biology of PETase and its mutants.
