STS-61

A silhouette of two individuals holding a camera lens pointed towards a space shuttle, with bright light emanating from the camera's lens, symbolizing the STS-61 mission, the first Hubble servicing mission by the Space Shuttle Endeavour in December 1993.

The first Hubble servicing mission, flown by the Space Shuttle Endeavour in December 1993. Over eleven days, the crew of seven performed five spacewalks — at the time the most ever on a single flight — to install COSTAR, replace the Wide Field and Planetary Camera, and refurbish the gyroscopes and solar arrays. The mission's success rescued both Hubble and the political case for crewed servicing.
