Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison, an American inventor and industrialist, is depicted in formal attire with white hair, wearing a black tuxedo and bow tie against a dark background.

American inventor and industrialist (1847–1931), self-taught, prolific, and ferociously commercial. Held 1,093 US patents covering the phonograph, the carbon-filament lamp, the kinetoscope, and the Pearl Street generating station that gave New York its first electric grid. Ran his laboratory at Menlo Park, and later West Orange, as a kind of invention factory. Lost the war of currents and largely stopped doing original electrical work after 1892.
