Thomas Mudge

Thomas Mudge, an English watchmaker from the late 18th century, is depicted in formal attire with a ruffled cravat, showcasing his historical significance in watchmaking.

An English watchmaker (1715–1794) apprenticed to George Graham, Mudge devised the detached lever escapement around 1755 as part of a pocket watch made for Ferdinand VI of Spain. The design, which separates the balance from the impulse train except during release, became after a century of refinement the standard for nearly every mechanical wristwatch produced anywhere in the world.
