Tokamak

A Tokamak reactor with a glowing red interior and metallic structure, showcasing its complex design and the intense light emanating from within.

A doughnut-shaped reactor that confines a hydrogen plasma inside a twisting magnetic field, keeping it away from the walls long enough for fusion to occur. The name is a Russian acronym from the original 1950s Soviet design. Hundreds of tokamaks have been built; the current largest, ITER, aims to be the first to produce ten times more fusion power than the energy required to heat its plasma.
