United States Military Railroad

A train station with a high arched roof and tracks leading into the distance under a skylight.

Federal agency created by Congress in January 1862 to seize, operate, and rebuild railroads in Union-held and captured territory during the Civil War. Under engineer Herman Haupt and his successors it built more than two thousand miles of track to a uniform standard gauge, including the rapid bridge repairs that kept Sherman's army supplied during the march on Atlanta.
