Voyager 1

A spacecraft with long, thin appendages extends from its body, set against a dark background, resembling the Voyager 1 probe.

NASA space probe launched on 5 September 1977 to survey Jupiter and Saturn and then to leave the solar system. It crossed the heliopause in August 2012 and is now the most distant human-made object, over twenty-four billion kilometres from Earth. A copy of the Golden Record is bolted to its flank; a decaying plutonium-238 generator still powers a handful of its instruments.
