Wang Zhenduo

Wang Zhenduo, wearing glasses, a dark jacket over a sweater and plaid shirt, stands against a neutral background.

Chinese museum curator and historian of science (1911-1992) attached to the National Museum of Chinese History in Beijing. In 1951 he produced the standard modern reconstruction of Zhang Heng's seismoscope, using a hanging pendulum and eight pivoted levers. The replica is the one reproduced on stamps, in textbooks, and in foreign museums, though specialists now regard its mechanism as unlikely to match the original.
