Person

William Bayliss

A man with a neatly combed hairstyle and a full beard is dressed in formal attire, including a dark suit, vest, and tie, seated against a warm-toned background.

British physiologist (1860–1924), married to Starling's sister, and the technical hand behind the secretin experiment. Bayliss later became famous outside the laboratory for winning a libel suit in 1903 against an anti-vivisection campaigner who had falsely accused him of operating on a conscious dog. The trial galvanised both the animal welfare movement and the defence of experimental medicine.
