William Gaud

William Gaud, wearing glasses, a dark suit, white shirt, and patterned tie, stands against a dark background.

William Gaud was an American administrator who directed the United States Agency for International Development in the late 1960s. He is best remembered for coining the phrase describing the dramatic mid-century increases in global agricultural yields. Seeking to differentiate this agricultural and technological shift from the violent political upheavals occurring in the Soviet Union and China, Gaud named the peaceful, science-driven transformation the Green Revolution.
