Woburn, Massachusetts

A quaint street in Woburn, Massachusetts, bathed in the warm glow of a setting sun, with historic brick buildings lining both sides and a prominent smokestack rising in the background.

A small industrial town north of Boston that hosted the Eagle India Rubber Company in the late 1830s. Goodyear conducted his decisive experiments there in 1839, using a partner's kitchen stove. The town's later notoriety came from a different kind of chemistry: trichloroethylene contamination of its water supply was the subject of the 1995 book and 1998 film A Civil Action.
