Einstein

A portrait of Albert Einstein, wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and tie, set against a dark background.

A German-born theoretical physicist (1879–1955) who between 1905 and 1916, first as a patent clerk in Bern and then as a professor in Berlin, produced the two theories of relativity that reshaped twentieth-century physics. Special relativity unified space and time and showed that moving clocks run slow; general relativity recast gravity as the curvature of spacetime by mass and energy. He died in Princeton, still trying to unify gravity with the rest of physics.
