The professional body for U.S. civil engineering, founded in 1852 and headquartered in Reston, Virginia. After the Hyatt collapse it issued revised guidelines on shop-drawing review and the engineer of record's continuing responsibility for design intent through construction. Those guidelines, refined through the 1980s and 1990s, are now embedded in most state licensing rules.
