American astronomer and planetary scientist (1934–1996) who turned the Cornell astronomy department into the closest thing late-twentieth-century science had to a pulpit. He worked on the Mariner, Viking, and Voyager missions, wrote Cosmos and Pale Blue Dot, and chaired the committee that assembled the Golden Record. He married Ann Druyan in 1981 and died of complications from a rare blood disorder fifteen years later.
