Derek de Solla Price

A man with gray hair and glasses wears a dark suit jacket over a white shirt with gold buttons, set against a neutral background.

English-American physicist and historian of science (1922–1983). He spent his career at Yale. In the 1950s he persuaded the National Archaeological Museum in Athens to let him X-ray the Antikythera Mechanism, producing the first published reconstruction of its gear-train in 1959. His monograph "Gears from the Greeks" (1974) remains the foundation of every subsequent study.
