George III

A portrait depicts George III, dressed in formal attire with a white ruffled cravat and a gold chain, set against a warm-toned background.

King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 to 1820. An amateur astronomer with his own observatory at Kew, he received John Harrison and his son William in 1772, tested H5 personally over six weeks (it gained one-third of a second a day), and is said to have told them, "By God, Harrison, I will see you righted." He then pressured Parliament into paying the remainder of the prize.
