James Webb Space Telescope

A James Webb Space Telescope is shown against a black background, featuring its large solar panels and central structure with a circular design.

The 6.5-metre infrared successor to Hubble, launched on Christmas Day 2021 to the Sun-Earth L2 point. Its segmented gold-coated mirror, sunshield the size of a tennis court, and cryogenic detectors were tested under multiple independent metrology paths — a direct response to the Hubble figuring failure. First science images were released in July 2022.
