MIT Instrumentation Laboratory

The Massachusetts research lab, founded by Charles Stark Draper in 1932, that designed inertial guidance systems for missiles, submarines and spacecraft. Awarded the first major Apollo contract in August 1961, it built the guidance computers and navigation software for every crewed lunar mission. Renamed the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in 1973, when MIT spun it off under political pressure during the Vietnam War.
