Roger Penrose

Roger Penrose, wearing glasses and a scarf, is captured in a close-up portrait against a neutral background.

British mathematical physicist (b. 1931) who shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on black hole formation. In books beginning with *The Emperor's New Mind* (1989), Penrose has argued that Gödel's theorems imply human mathematical insight cannot be reduced to algorithmic computation. Most logicians reject the argument, but no consensus refutation exists.
