Scilly Isles

A small, sunlit island with rolling green hills and rugged cliffs is surrounded by deep blue waters under a cloudy sky.

An archipelago of about 140 granite islands and rocks 45 kilometres off the south-western tip of Cornwall. Their position athwart the western approaches to the English Channel has made them a graveyard for ships bound for Plymouth and Portsmouth. The 1707 disaster, in which a homecoming British fleet struck them in fog, became the political catalyst for the Longitude Act.
