American radio astronomer (1930–2022) best known for the Drake Equation, an attempt to estimate the number of communicative civilisations in the galaxy. He conducted the first systematic radio search for extraterrestrial signals in 1960, designed the Pioneer plaque with Carl Sagan, and worked out the pulsar triangulation that locates Earth on the Voyager record.
