Concept

general theory of relativity

The image depicts a conceptual representation of the General Theory of Relativity, showing a central black circle surrounded by an orange hexagonal structure, with spheres and abstract shapes orbiting around it, symbolizing the curvature of spacetime and its effects on objects.

Einstein's 1915 theory of gravity, which replaced Newton's instantaneous force with a geometric description: mass tells spacetime how to curve, curved spacetime tells mass how to move. The theory predicts black holes, the bending of light by the Sun, the precession of Mercury's orbit, and the existence of gravitational waves. Every prediction has so far survived experimental test.
