Math
Monty Hall Problem
#052 · status: draft
Three doors. One has a car. Two have goats. You pick door one. The host—who knows what's behind each door—opens door three, revealing a goat. He asks: do you want to switch to door two? Most people say it doesn't matter. 50-50 chance either way, right? Wrong. If you switch, you win 66% of the time. If you stay, only 33%. When this puzzle appeared in Parade magazine in 1990, nearly a thousand PhDs wrote in to say it was wrong. They were all mistaken. Here's why switching works: When you first picked, you had a 1-in-3 chance of being right. That means there's a 2-in-3 chance the car is behind one of the OTHER doors. When the host eliminates a goat, all that 66% probability concentrates on the remaining door. Your first choice didn't get better. The other option did. This is why intuition fails with probability—our brains weren't built for Bayesian reasoning. The math doesn't lie. Switch the door.
Hindi script
Door switch karo. 66% time jeeto. Hazaaron PhDs ne ye galat kiya.
Teen doors. Ek ke peeche car. Do ke peeche goats. Tumne door one choose kiya. Host—jo jaanta hai kya kahan hai—door three kholta hai, goat dikhata hai. Wo puchta hai: door two pe switch karna hai? Zyada log kehte hain koi farak nahi padta. 50-50 chance, right? Galat. Agar switch karo, 66% time jeeto. Agar raho, sirf 33%. Jab ye puzzle 1990 mein Parade magazine mein aaya, almost hazaar PhDs ne likha ki ye galat hai. Wo sab galat the. Switch kyun kaam karta hai: Jab tumne pehli baar choose kiya, 1-in-3 chance tha sahi hone ka. Matlab 2-in-3 chance hai car DUSRE doors mein hai. Jab host ek goat eliminate karta hai, wo pura 66% probability remaining door pe concentrate ho jaata hai. Tumhari pehli choice better nahi hui. Dusra option better ho gaya. Math jhooth nahi bolta. Door switch karo.
