Archimedes

A bust of Archimedes, a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, and astronomer, with curly white hair and a long beard, draped in a red garment against a dark background.

Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer and astronomer of Syracuse (c. 287 – c. 212 BCE). His geometric and mechanical work was unmatched in antiquity. Cicero, writing a century after his death, describes a planetarium-like device attributed to Archimedes that displayed the motion of the Sun, Moon and five planets — the closest textual analogue we have to the Antikythera Mechanism.
